Name/Title

Carved Variegated Stone Landscape with Crane, Pine and Pavilion

Entry/Object ID

SC1903

Description

Chinese carved variegated ornamental stone landscape of upright boulder form, worked principally on one face with a crane among pine branches above a mountainous scene incorporating a small human figure and pavilion or bridge-like architecture. The carving combines pierced and higher-relief work in the crane and foliage with shallower relief and linear detailing in the landscape below. The naturally mottled stone ranges from reddish brown and rose to cream, gray and tan, with the variation incorporated into the composition. The reverse is predominantly polished with limited shallow carving. Mounted on an associated/fitted carved wooden stand.
