Carved Variegated Stone Landscape with Figures on Bridge, Pines and Pavilions
Entry/Object ID
SC1904
Description
Chinese carved variegated ornamental stone boulder worked on both principal faces with mountainous landscapes. The more extensively carved face depicts two human figures standing or walking upon a bridge or balustraded path beneath trees, with roofed architecture in the distant upper landscape and a dark natural inclusion incorporated into the composition as a stream or watercourse. The reverse carries a more restrained landscape incorporating pine trees and a small bridge or architectural element. The carving combines pierced and relief work with incised detailing and broad polished surfaces, deliberately exploiting the stone's natural yellow, honey-brown, reddish-pink, cream and dark gray coloration. Mounted on an associated/fitted carved wooden stand.
