Description
Chinese carved dark ornamental stone figure of a recumbent Buddhist lion (shishi), the compact animal depicted with an expressive broad head, open mouth, curled mane and a forepaw resting upon a rounded brocade ball. The carving combines smoothly polished body surfaces with more detailed carving around the face and limited undercutting between the forelimbs. The stone is very dark reddish-brown to near-black and has not been mineralogically identified. A decorative cord with bead and terminal ornament passes through a drilled opening at the rear
