Name/Title

Carved Variegated Stone Figure of a Seated Scholar in Natural Rockwork

Entry/Object ID

SC2007

Description

Chinese carved variegated ornamental stone boulder incorporating a seated or reclining robed male figure, probably representing a scholar or sage, into the natural form of the stone. The figure is selectively carved and polished from a pale translucent portion of the specimen, while much of the adjoining matrix has been retained in a rough crystalline state with cream, gray, pink-red and dark mineral zones. Faint markings visible on the rock face may represent an inscription or other surface notation.

Faint Chinese inscription arranged in multiple vertical columns on the smooth natural rock face adjacent to the carved figure. Traces of pale green pigment remain in portions of the inscription.
