Chinese carved variegated stone boulder depicting scholars and attendants within a mountainous pine landscape. The principal face centers on a group of figures gathered around an incised weiqi (Go) board beneath mature pine trees, with additional figures, rockwork and distant architecture extending through the composition. The reverse is also extensively worked with pine trees, figures, rock formations and architectural elements, creating a substantially two-sided landscape carving. The carver has incorporated the stone's natural gray, cream, ochre and brown coloration and retained broad polished areas as pictorial space.Type of Sculpture
