Chinese carved variegated ornamental stone figure of a cicada resting upon a stylized leaf or plant form. The insect is modeled in high relief with individually carved legs and broad folded wings articulated with an extensive network of veins. The carver has exploited the natural variation of the stone, contrasting the cicada's honey-brown head and thorax and pale wings with the translucent smoky gray-brown, cream and dark coloration of the underlying leaf. The leaf is further defined by long incised veins extending across its polished surface. Probably China, 20th century. The precise stone has not been determined. The cicada is a longstanding motif in Chinese decorative art associated with auspicious themes including renewal and longevity.
