Carved Variegated Stone Bamboo Segment with Cicada and Insect

Name/Title

Carved Variegated Stone Bamboo Segment with Cicada and Insect

Entry/Object ID

SC2406

Description

Chinese carved variegated ornamental stone group modeled as a hollow section of bamboo supporting a cicada and a smaller beetle-like insect. The cylindrical body is articulated by raised bands representing the nodes of a bamboo culm and is hollowed at one end. The large cicada is rendered with deeply undercut legs and broad wings finely incised with naturalistic venation. The carver has exploited the natural coloration of the stone, contrasting the warm tan-brown bamboo with the honey-colored body and pale wings of the cicada and the pale greenish smaller insect. The cicada and bamboo belong to the auspicious vocabulary of Chinese decorative art and may evoke renewal, longevity, resilience and integrity.
