Carved Pale Green Stone Three-Piece Tea Service with Lidded Teapot and Two Cups
Entry/Object ID
SC1107
Description
Chinese carved three-piece ornamental stone tea service comprising a lidded teapot and two matching cups, worked from pale greenish-white translucent stone displaying prominent russet-brown veining and localized gray-black mineral inclusions. The compressed rounded teapot is fitted with a broad loop handle, short projecting spout and circular removable lid. Its exterior is embellished with carved relief decoration incorporating scrolling leaves and rounded vegetal or fruit-like forms, while the two accompanying cups are of simple rounded form with polished interiors and exteriors.
The naturally occurring color variation and veining remain conspicuous throughout the service and appear to have been accepted as decorative features of the material rather than concealed. The teapot and cups exhibit sufficiently similar color, translucency, veining and workmanship to support cataloging them as an associated set, although their contemporaneous manufacture cannot be established from photographs alone. Accompanied by a rectangular dark wood display tray with recessed upper panel and pierced decorative apron.
