Carved Variegated Stone Figure of a Seated Bearded Elder on RockworkEntry/Object ID
SC0202Description
Chinese carved variegated stone figure of a bearded elder seated informally upon rockwork, depicted with hair gathered into a topknot, dressed in loose robes and posed with one knee raised while holding an unidentified attribute. The carving is worked substantially in the round, with incised details defining the hair, beard, facial features and drapery. The naturally variegated stone ranges from cream and amber to rose-red and deep reddish-brown, with the stronger coloration incorporated prominently into the rock-form base. The reverse is more broadly modeled and the underside retains visible working marks and natural irregularities.Type of Sculpture
