Famille-Rose Porcelain Snuff Bottle with Luohan and Elephant, Twin Lug Handles
Entry/Object ID
SB3621
Description
A small Chinese porcelain snuff bottle of elongated ovoid form with a rounded, non-standing lower body, short flared neck and paired pierced lug handles. Painted in polychrome overglaze enamels, one side depicts an elderly bearded figure, probably a Luohan/arhat, in pink robes, while the reverse depicts an elephant amid broad-leaf vegetation. The unusual footless form and pierced neck lugs distinguish the bottle from conventional footed porcelain examples. No stopper is present. Provisionally attributed to the Qing dynasty, probably first half of the 19th century; the intended function of the pierced lugs and whether the bottle originally had a fitted display stand remains unknown.
