Description

Set of eight glazed porcelain snuff bottles of varying cylindrical, shouldered, globular and rounded forms, decorated in polychrome overglaze enamels with Chinese figural and landscape scenes. The compositions depict scholars, officials and attendants within settings of pine and other trees, rocks, mountains, garden architecture and furnishings, with several bottles incorporating vertical calligraphic inscriptions and red seal-like devices. Pine, appearing prominently throughout the group, traditionally symbolizes longevity, endurance and steadfastness. The bottles are fitted with related domed porcelain stoppers decorated predominantly with repeating iron-red petal-like borders, with blue neck rings appearing on several examples. The recessed bases bear iron-red four-character 光緒年製 (Guangxu nian zhi) marks, reading “Made during the Guangxu reign.”
