Traditional Chinese Shan Shui Painted Landscape Hanging Scroll
Entry/Object ID
WH0100
Description
A hanging scroll depicting a mountain and water landscape in autumn. The hand-written, black ink text written above the landscape section consists of a poetic couplet and signature line.
Written by the famous Song Dynasty poet, scholor, and statesman Su Shi, "Mountain Village: Two Poems" translates to;
Bamboo fences and thatched cotttages line the winding creek,
As spring arrives the mountain village bursts everywhere with flowers.
Though a time of great peace has no visable form, a sign reveals itself:
Where a single plume of cooking smoke rises, there lies a home
Amidst the misty rain, the sounds of chickens and dogs drift by,
Where in this life can a living soul not find peace and livlihood?
If only the young oxen have no heavy burdens or seals attached,
The cuckoo bird would not need to waste its effort singing to urge the spring plowing.
