Description

Chinese dark brown-purple zisha-type stoneware teapot of rounded form, decorated around the shoulder and cover with an irregular contrasting mixed-clay band displaying a pronounced wood-grain or marbled effect associated with the jiao-ni (絞泥) tradition. With broad upswept spout, pierced scrolling handle and fitted cover surmounted by a sculptural pierced spiral-form finial. Square multi-character seal-script mark impressed to recessed base, with two additional impressed marks beneath the cover. China, probably later 20th century; maker presently unidentified.
