Robert Mapplethorpe was an American photographer, known for his stylized black and white photography which treated his subjects with simultaneous sensitivity and bluntness. He worked in a variety of genres, including celebrity portraits, male and female nudes, self-portraits, and still-lifes. His work often made controversial references to religious or classical imagery.
