Description

1928 Gilbert 26' Long Deck Launch This 26' long deck launch is a traditional example of the style built in the mid teens to early 1930s, with a long foredeck, aft steering and seating, and displacement hull. While many Gilbert boats were planked in Cedar and Cypress, this example is fully planked in mahogany from the waterline up, which would have been at the request of the owner at the time that it was built. With blind-fastened carvel hull planking, there are no fasteners visible making for a smooth exterior finish. The boat has undergone comprehensive restoration work by her previous owners and appears to be in excellent structural and cosmetic condition. The boat has been repowered with a 1940's era Chrysler Crown 110-hp engine which is sized appropriately for the boat. Engine and electrical have been converted to run on a 12V system. Original Gilbert boats are extremely collectible in the 1000 Islands region. Gilbert was best known for it's rowing skiffs, small motor skiffs, powered launches, and runabout models. Many original Gilbert boats were lost in a factory fire during the 1940's where many examples were in storage or undergoing maintenance there. Purchased by Greg Hogarth's father in 1993, restored in 2013, was rarely used between restoration and donation to museum. Extensive marine survey available in physical accession file.
