Description

Awning Skiff The "Awning Skiff" is a 24' 1907 St. Lawrence Motor Skiff made of cedar planking over steam bent white oak ribs in the lapstrake design. The foredeck and covering board are mahogany plank. It has an open cockpit design with full coaming around the perimeter of the cockpit. It is powered by a 4 cylinder Buchanan Midget gas inboard, approx 20 hp. It originally would have been powered with a two cylinder 8-12 hp St. Lawrence engine (made in Brockville). The engine is open and located amidships with wet exhaust through port in hull topsides. It is direct drive through a stainless steel shaft, through a bronze shaft log. Steering is side wheel pull - pull cable type to a stern mounted brass rudder. It had extensive restoration work to make it sound and seaworthy in 2006-09. The hull was found in approximately 1990 on Wolfe Island in good condition with just a few damaged planks and no engine, then stored in a dry barn in Napanee for about 15 years before work began to restore it. Restoration work was as follows: -32 ribs replaced with new white oak -3 planks replaced with new northern white cedar -all decks and comings replaced with new Honduras mahogany -new white cedar ceilings and floor boards installed -brass hardware made and installed -top (awning) made and installed -leather seats made and installed -22 HP Buchanane engine made in Orillia, ON installed.
