Description

From Sunrise County Architecture (2nd revised and enlarged edition) 1996, p. 118: PRINCE COTTAGE Colonel Lawrence L. Prince, a St. Louis,Missouri, cotton broker had the Prince Cottage built in 1893, but both designer and builder are unknown. For three generations, members of the Prince family spent summers as next-door neighbors of the Roosevelts. In 1941 the Prince family sold this cottage to Henry E. Mattin, of the Mearl Corporation of Eastport, who had helped to develop the herring Pearl Essence industry on both sides of the Bay of Fundy. In 1968 Mattin transferred the title to the Park Commission. The gabIe roof, shingles with asphalt, and divided by three dormers on each side, is upheld by pairs of Doric columns. Venindas, on both windward and leeward sides, circle this rectangular wooden frame cottage, with a balustrade and wooden screens between the columns on the windward side. Besides the living room, there is an office. In 1971 the building was improved by being rewired, and the heating system was improved, as well as the number of upstairs toilets increased. Although interior changes have been made, the original fireplace design is visible. The deck in back was replaced, while sills have been restored to the original plans. The Park Commission greatly remodeled this cottage into the main dining room, and kitchen, for conference guests, who also use eight upstairs bedrooms. All four cottages -- Franklin Roosevelt, Hubbard, Prince and Wells-Shober -- have been recognized as National Historic Sites by the Federal Heritage Buildings Review Office in Canada. After a century the exterior is unchanged. NHSD, JCB
