The painting is identified in pencil on the back as "Cyrus Hamlin, brother of Hannibal, lived at Calais". Further notation states that " this portrait belongs to Cyrus Hamlin great, great grandson of Hannibal by direction of Louise Hamlin & loaned to J.C. Moore & V. H. Moore" . Coming from Hamlin heirs with pencil inscription on the back, seems like pretty solid identification. Cyrus Hamlin was born at Livermore ME in 1802 and died in 1839. His parents were Dr. Cyrus Hamlin ( same name ) and Anna Nancy Livermore Hamlin. His brother Hannibal (Lincoln's VP) was born in 1809 in Paris ME. Cyrus completed Medical School at Bowdoin College in 1828 and then moved to Dennysville and set up a medical practice there . After 3 years at Dennnysville, he transferred his practice to Calais working out of the house that is now the St.Croix Historical Society. There is a short more complete account of Cyrus Hamlin's downeast life in the blog at fineartistmade.com Part 1 of Dr. Holmes Cottage Museum written June 8, 2012. There is no signature on this painting which was done on wood panel. It measures 27.5" x 33.5" [framed]. It is in original untouched condition, perhaps needing professional cleaning. Both vertical edges are now slightly bowed and also could use professional attention. It has a lemon gold frame which is solid and sturdy but with spots of wear. Information footnote: The portrait that is on the St. Croix Historical Society website showing a Dr. Cyrus Hamlin is actually a portrait of the father Dr. Cyrus Hamlin and not the Dr. Cyrus Hamlin who practiced medicine in Calais. Hamlin Memorial Library & Museum located in Paris ME, which owns the painting shown on the SCHS website, details and verifies this fact. Local pickup only on this painting; no shipping. Ebay is now charging sales tax in most states.
