Description

Artist: Pauline Inman Medium: Woodblock engraving Circa: 1947 Old Accession Number: 1860 Description: Signed bottom right. 1 of 2 copies. The Chandler Place, 1947 Wood Engraving The family name “Chandler” has had a strong association with Addison, Maine since at least the nineteenth century. Utilizing her compositional preference of foreground, middle ground, and background, Inman guides the viewer’s eyes along the angled wooden post fence to the dark, silhouetted tree bisecting the home in the middle ground. The mature landscaping surrounding the house in the background suggests that the “Chandler Place” has been there for generations. Perhaps the tree, which appears almost as if it is growing out of the home, is in reference to the long family lineage and many branches of the Chandler family in Addison.
