Wood Engraving
Depicted from the low perspective of a child, this diminutive wood engraving shows the activity and excitement of an annual summer fair. Watching the carousel spin and the Ferris wheel turn in the background, the crowd of excited children and adults make their way through the fair and into the distant striped tent. Anticipating his next activity, this little boy, grasped tightly by his father’s hand and holding on to his balloon, is consumed with the magic of the fair that seems to come straight out of a child’s imagination. As landmarks of summer, fairs and festivals offer times to celebrate with pride the identity of one’s community.
