Neighbors, 1956
Wood Engraving
Three neighbors stop to chat, feeling the warmth of the sun and the chill of the breeze off the water. The three generations of women are joined by a fourth neighbor–the visiting gull–a species that is an ever-present part of coastal communities and ecosystems. The gathering of four conveys an image of a shared home, intergenerational support in rural communities, and the simple pleasures of nature. The figures of the two younger women appear to be based on the same reference drawing for two of the customers in Cake Sale (exhibited nearby). Neighbors was a celebrated Inman print, exhibited in three exhibitions, including Contemporary Prints: America and Japan at the Isetan Gallery in Tokyo, Japan in 1967. Neighbors was slated to be part of the book publication Endgrain: Contemporary Wood Engraving in North America (1990).
