Summer Shadows, 1947
Wood Engraving
Like House at the Cove displayed to the left, Summer Shadows uses the sun as the composition’s invisible subject, casting shadows of a four-trunked tree onto the wood siding of an old barn. An overgrown wheelbarrow sits forgotten in the long grass and a horse cart rests idle in the summer heat. The unconventional composition allows the barn siding to expand to the outer edges of the print, serving as the canvas for the dancing lines of shadows drawn by the sun.
