Description

Artist: Pauline Inman Medium: Woodblock engraving Circa: 1954 Old Accession Number: 1833 Description: Signed bottom right. 1 of 2 copies. (Antique Store) Rte. 1, 1954 Wood Engraving At first glance this accumulation of objects might look like any Route 1 roadside antique store. However, this collection of objects–without any humans present–reflects the collection of individuals that make up a community. Three different historic styles and types of chair, a child’s rocking horse, a carved female figurehead from the bow of a ship, and a lawn jockey statue each embody the industry, styles, and memories of the past, reflecting both the opulent and the humble. The empty, ornate frame offers an open-ended symbol to celebrate the individual as part of a whole.
