Description

Artist: Prosper Senat Medium: Etching Classification: Prints Circa: 1886 Old Accession Number: 1677 Description: Squally Point, Grand Menan. On the eastern face of Grand Menan there are, in many places, immense gorges, which run from the sea up into the cliffs above. One of these at Squally Point continues for some distance inland, and from its funnel-like formation — contracting as it approaches the water — concentrates the air in puffs or "cat's paws,” even in the calmest weather. In stormy seasons, when the wind is from the west and southward, these amount often to heavy squalls, giving the locality its dangerous name and causing it to be avoided by the smaller fishing craft except in quiet weather.
