Description:
Harbor Beacon, Grand Menan, N.B. These small light-houses or harbor beacons, are very common throughout the British-American provinces, although the one represented is all that Grand Menan has ever had. It served to guide the hardy fishermen of the little hamlet of Seal Cove, devoted like all other villages on the island, to the fishing interest. The beacon and fog bell, together with the pier were carried away in the heavy gales of 1881, since which the boats have been “lighted in” during bad weather by “range lights” situated back in the village at a height to be seen for many miles at sea.
