INDIAN RIVER BAPTIST CHURCH
Local builder Norman Ward built this transitional Greek Revival/ltalianate style wooden frame church in 1853-1854, on land donated by Susannah K. Emerson. The American Baptist Churches of Maine gave building and land to the Indian River Community Association because no Baptist congregation remained using it for worship. Resting on a granite foundation, the three bay facade supports a triangular pediment, as well as a double tower added about 90 years ago. Two doors are separated by an unusual 30 over 30 double sash window. A hipped roof covers the belfry. The walls and ceilings are lath, covered by plaster. Unlike either early Greek Revival, or later Italianate styles, the cornice is an example of the 1850s transition. This is almost the only 19th century religious building in western Washington County originally built without the obligatory bell tower. Since 1988 it has been on the National Register of Historic Places. KFM, JCB
