WASHINGTON COUNTY COURTHOUSE
This two and one-half story court house is built of brick in the Italianate style, and was designed by the firn of Benjamin S. Deane and Edwin Lee Brown of Bangor. It is believed that the design was primarily the work of Deane, who was the senior partner in the finn. The building was constructed by Ebenezer Adams and Sons, and completed in 1853. The bricks for the structure came from Marshfield. The courthouse has heavy denticulation of the cornice and gable end, and the windows are arched and set into arched brick recessions. Brick pilasters separate the windows on the second floor, and a granite string course circumvents the building at the ground and second floor levels. A square wooden cupola sits on top of the gable end facing Court Street, and the bell was added in 1868. The interior was completely remodelled in 1886, in accordance with plans drawn up by Francis H. Fassett of Portland and executed by Andrew R. Gilson of Machias. An addition was built on the west side of the structure in the midtwentieth century. The Washington County Courthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places. FAB, AFN
