Built:1893 Address: 92 Court Street Machias, Maine ARCHITECTS George Clough ARCHITECTURAL STYLES Romanesque Revival From Sunrise County Architecture (2nd revised and enlarged edition) 1996, p.66: PORTER MEMORIAL LIBRARY This Romanesque Revival style building was designed by George A. Clough of Boston, and built. by Andrew Gilson of Machias. Henry Homes Porter, a prominent Chicago railroad executive and industrialist, donated the money to build the library. Plans were drawn up and a lot chosen in 1891, and the building was dedicated on September 15, 1893. The Library Association named the structure in honor of both Henry Homes Porter and his father Rufus K: Porter, who was a respected lawyer in town. This one and one-halfstory building is of granite ashlar construction and has aT-shaped plan. Features of this period of architecture are the arched entryway,r-ounded windows surmounted by semicircular arches, and the stone pinnacles on each gable end. The library is located on Court Street. The Library campaign for $600,000 will repair this building as well as adding a wing. AFN. JCB. KMN.
