FRANK CAMPBELL HOUSE
Charles A. Allen, of Cherryfield, called "one of the most imaginative small-town Maine architects", as well as master builder, built the Frank Campbell House in 1875 for Frank Campbell. Allen designed four other Cherryfield buildings. A two and 1/2 story Second Empire style clapboarded, wooden framed home with square front tower, this building has a mansard second story roof, partly asphalt shingled and partly cedar shingled. Four arched dormers, with decorative moldings, punctuate the second floor, while the rounded half-story observatory window does not. The railed veranda, leading to the entrance, has five posts, below dentiled eaves. From the back of the center section, an ell, with pitched roof, connects with the gable-roofed barn. This home has been preserved excellently for 120 years. F AB, JCB -

The Frank Campbell House is a remarkable two-story Second Empire style frame dwelling featuring a variety of ornamental woodwork as well as a front tower encircled by a wrap-around porch. Its three-bay facade is dominated by the tower which is capped by a bell cast mansard roof punctuated on each of its four sides by round arched dormers. The windows have heavily molded and bracketed hoods, and the cornices of both the porch and main body of the house have bracketed and denticulated cornices. A secondary entrance tower and porch are located on the west elevation. The lower slope of the mansard roof is sheathed in slate. There is a carriage house at the rear of the lot.
