CENTRE STREET CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH
The Centre Street Congregational Church is one of the earliest Gothic Revival churches in Maine, and was built in 1836-1837. Although some people believe it to have been built by Edward Shaw, the church records indicate it was built by a "Mr. Stephenson," of whom nothing else is known. The entrance to the church is a large pointed arch flanked by two smaller arches openings. The building has elongated pointed arched windows with hooded moldings above. The octagonal spire sits on a square steeple base with a clock on each side. The corners of the tower have pilasters with pointed tops, and crenellation bordering the sides. The stained glass windows were installed in 1899. The church has a Paul Revere bell and a Tracker organ,and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
