JOSHUA PETTEGROVE HOUSE (RED BEACH)
Built in 1854, this Gothic Revival style wooden frame residence overlooks the St. Croix River, and rests on a granite foundation. The landscaping followed the Andrew Jackson Downing schools long approach road and river view on the south end. This one-and-a-half story cottage includes a three-bay steeply-pitched gable, as well as a kitchen ell with two six-aver-six windows and twin dormers above these windows. In the 1930s a hip roof, above the porch, was added, on the south side. A steeply-pitched gable roof covers the carriage barn, which is shingled, and a pair of modem garage doors, two other small doors and a triangular window have been added. Joshua Pettegrove was a shipbuilder in Calais who sailed his ships to England and put them up for sale. KFM,JCB
