Description

Charlotte, Maine From Sunrise County Architecture (2nd revised and enlarged edition) 1996, p.38: THE CHARLOTTE CATTLE POUND The Charlotte Cattle Pound requirement was first identified by the residents in 1826. The present one was built about 1866 and is one of the few remaining in the State of Maine. The octagonal structure is made of cedar logs which are now moss-covered Although there have been many odd stories about its use, such as keeping stray dogs in it or the wives keeping their men in it, it was mainly used to hold livestock that had strayed from the owners property onto another persons land. Today it is a landmark in Charlotte, and anyone traveling here for the first time seems to take note of it. ALC
