WASHINGTON ACADEMY
Washington Academy is a fine example of Federal period architecture, and was completed in 1823, The design is almost church-like in form with its high bell tower and arched woodwork in front, and is similar to Asher Benjamins early church plans. The building is six bays long with a gable roof, and three bayed front. The door is crowned with a fanlight and flanked by pilasters and a projecting arched molding. The north wing ofthe building was added later. The structure continues to be run as a private academy and is part of the East Machias Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places. AFN
