East Machias, Maine From Sunrise County Architecture (2nd revised and enlarged edition) 1996, p.57: PETER TALBOT HOUSE Peter Talbot Sr. moved to Machias in June 1771, from Stoughton, Massachusetts. He,started construction of this two and one-half story Colonial house in that year, and completed it in November 1772. The house originally stood on the present location of the James Talbot House, and was moved up the hill with 9 yoke of oxen in 1875. The original ell on the Peter Talbot House was not moved, and still stands next to the James Talbot House. The house was restored in 1916 by Emily Talbot Walker and Frederick E. Hovey, and at that time the simple post and lintel framing of the doorway was removed and a semi-elliptica1 fan added. The Peter Talbot House is situated on Gunhouse Hill. AFN
