From Sunrise County Architecture (2nd revised and enlarged edition) 1996, p.63:
HEMINGWAY SCHOOL
The present MachiasTown Office was originally built as a schoolhouse. This two and onehalf story building had two schoolrooms: one for primary and one for intermediate scholars. It is built of wood in the Italianate style of architecture, and has a gabled end, and ornately carved window lintels. The building has heavy corner pilasters, and pedimented doorway. It was completed in 1863, and in the early 1870s was named the Hemingway School, probably in honor of William Hemingway, a prominent saw mill oWIier who lived across from the school. Tbe building now serves as the location for all the town offices, and is situated on Court Street. AFN
