NASH HOUSE
This ltalianate two-and-a-half story home stands on two acres on Court Street abutting the town cemetery. Construction directed by Josiah Lowell Nash, the well-known Master Builder of the region, began just after Gettysburg in 1863, with completion in 1864. Nash and his family resided in high fashion in the house for over thirty years, losing it to foreclosure during the Panic of 1893. It was in this home that William R. Pattangall, later to become Chief Justice of the Maine Supreme Court, wrote most of his famous political satire, Meddybemps Letters. The east side of this structure foreshadows the development of the elaborate towers of the late nineteenth century. The woodwork: doors, sashes, and moldings are all the product of Machias woodmills of the period. The attached shed and three-level barn are crowned with a cupola This massive Victorian stands as a monument to the aesthetic tastes and architectural skills of the individuals of Washington County.
