S.W. POPE STORE
Samuel Warren Pope owned a lumber company with operations in Machias and East Machias. He had this general store and a house next door built for the manager of his company in 1860. Horatio L. Hill was the architect of the two buildings, and supervised the construction with the help of his brother Frederick A. Hill. Both buildings are built of wood in the Italianate style. The general store was one of the largest stores in town and is two and one-half stories high with a bracketed cornice and ornamental window lintels. The managers house was built for John K. Ames, who later became an important figure in the lumber business. The entrance is on the gable end facing the street and has ornate woodwork above the door. Both buildings are located at the foot of College Hill in Machias. AFN
