Machias, Maine From Sunrise County Architecture (2nd revised and enlarged edition) 1996, p.70: SAMUEL MORSE HOUSE This Federal style home was built by Samuel Morse as a gift to his bride, Abigail, daughter of Gideon OBrien. Samuel Morse came from Clinton, New York to Machias in 1805 and was a school teacher for several years, and a lieutenant in the U.S. Army at Fort OBrien in the War of 1812. He later became a merchant. He was the collector of customs for Machias from 1820-1836; and later in Eastport from 1836-1840, and was the treasurer of Washington County from 1842- 1851. The house was completed in 1810, and has a semi -ellipticalfanlight, end chimneys, and is of wooden clapboard construction. It has a later addition on the back. The Morse House overlooks the Machias River from its location on Elm Street. AFN
