Description

Whitneyville, Maine From Sunrise County Architecture (2nd revised and enlarged edition) 1996, p.76: WHITNEYVILLE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH William C. Bowker of Machias, an architect, met at the Whitneyville schoolhouse in 1868 with members to plan a new church building. Before the Saxby Gale, "the frame was up and boarded when the October (1869) tornado demolished it." Work resumed in 1870, and the exterior of the building completed. The interior was finished just before the March 30, 1875, dedication: "The weather favorable, sleighing good." Unlike arched Gothic churches in East Machias and Machias, this Italianate church has roundheaded windows and ornate lintels similar to those in the Rawson School, in Machias, which Bowker had completed in 1871. An octagonal spire is set on top of a two-story square steeple base, with ornamental pinnacles at each comer. The denticµlated cornice is supported by paired brackets. Above the Toof is the circular, three-faced clock (made by E. Howard Clock Co. of Boston). It is at the comer of Route I-A and Washington Street, by the river. AFN, JCB
