From Sunrise County Architecture (2nd revised and enlarged edition) 1996, p.78:
THE OCTAGON
This two story rustic octagonal cottage was built on land jointly owned by Gilbert Longfellow and John U. Chandler sometime between 1885 and 1887. It is believed to have been primarily built for John U. Chandler, a traveling salesman, and Charles Preble of Machias was master builder. This summer home has been known as the Octagon and the Inkwell. Octagonal homes became popular in the late 1850s to 1860s in Maine, and Mr. Chandler had the only nineteenth century octagonal house in Washington County. The Octagon has a one story porch on four of its eight sides. AFN
