Samuel Bucknam House | Columbia Falls, Maine

Description

Columbia Falls, Maine From Sunrise County Architecture (2nd revised and enlarged edition) 1996, p.83: SAMUEL BUCKNAM HOUSE Samuel Bucknam (1788-1867), the grandson of John Bucknam (who came in 1773 from North Yarmouth, Maine), built in 1820-1821 "one of the most ornately finished houses of it kind in Maine -- "one of the "finest Federal period Cape style houses" in Maine. On a granite foundation, this one-and-a-half story wooden frame, clapboarded residence has a gabled roof. Both the main house, as well as the one-story kitchen ell, have separate, brick-covered chimneys and asphalt shingled roofs. A center door entrance, which splits the five___________ bay facade, has louvered shutters on each side and a fan light above. Four nine-over-six windows complete the facade. Master carpenter Aaron· Sherman, who some say designed the Ruggles House decorations, built the Samuel Bucknam House as well. Alvah Peterson, who came to Columbia Falls from Duxbury, Massachusetts, with Sherman, to carve interior wood in the Ruggles House, repeated Petersons skill in the Samuel Buckllam House as well. This house has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978. F AB, JCB
