Hello Mr. French,
I am writing in reference to two Anthony Flower paintings that according to our records are
part of the collection of the Tides Institute: a street scene; and group by a tree and stream.
Queens County Heritage based in Gagetown, New Brunswick, is the owner of the Anthony
Flower House, Cambridge-Narrows, New Brunswick. For almost 20 years since the
acquisition of the house, QC Heritage has continued the research and development of the
Flower collection, his art and the documentation of works in public and private collections
elsewhere. One of the exciting tasks is to source the inspirations for many of Flower's
works. Early on, the thought was many of his landscapes were from his imagination or
memories of growing up in England. Very soon we found he was copying scenes that he
found in periodicals or from other prints. Of the approximately 300 paintings documented,
about two-thirds have been sourced to things like the Illustrated London News, the
Illustrated Times, books of poetry and even some novels.
Recently editions of the Illustrated London Almanack became available online. After a
review of the available editions, 6 inspirations for Flower paintings were found - including
the two of the Tides Institute. Attached are images from the pages of the Almanack.
1. the street scene. From the Illustrated London Almanack for 1849, page 26. Section on
June, entitled Whitsuntide Procession. The original shows a large parade of people in
middle of the street, however the side buildings and trees match Flower's composition. In
his composition, Flower has replaced the parade (too complex?) with a person following a
cow down the street. A church has also been inserted in the background. Early thoughts
on this work was that perhaps it was from memory of the village where he grew up - the
latest find indicates it is not.
2. group by tree and stream. From the Illustrated London Almanack for 1849, page 14.
Section on March, entitled Primrose and Palm Gathering. This is a more faithful rendition of
the composition.
We have updated our records and information accordingly but thought you would be
interested to know what we found and would like to update your files as well.
