CHERRYFIELD ACADEMY
The Union School District was formed in 1850 to fund the construction of the Cherryfield Academy Building. This two and one-half story wooden frame Greek Revival structure, on a granite foundation with a gable roof, which stands on Main Street, served as a school until 1967. There were two gable ends facing the street, later replaced with 12-over-12 windows when the south wing and bell tower were added. Only the half-story window is 12-over-8. The projecting three central bays, with one bay on each side, make up the southern exposure facade. Most of the walls are, clapboarded, except for match-boards on west and east ends. Later the square bell tower louvered windows were boarded up, the facades platform removed and the south wing entrance roofed. Cornices, a frieze and pilasters, as well as pediments at the gable-ends, are typical of the 1850s. Lintels crown two first-story panelled doors. From 1850 the first story was used as a town hall, the school using the second story. The Cherryfield Academy Building has been used as both public library and town office from 1967 to 1995.
