Description

Cherryfield, Maine From Sunrise County Architecture (2nd revised and enlarged edition) 1996, p.90: ARCHIBALD-ADAMS HOUSE About 1793-1795 (James) Thomas Archibald, from Nova Scotia, is believed to have built this two-story, five bay Federal style residence. His daughter, Elizabeth (Archibald) Adams (1 "T89- 1811), married Joseph H. Adams (1784-1872) in 1809, but after her death Adams married again, with Nancy (Campbell) Adams (1782-1834), daughter of General Alexander Campbell. After Nancys death, Adams remarried again, with Abigail (Stone) Adams (1796-1878). Abigail and Joseph Adams lived in this house until their deaths, six years apart. On the Narraguagus River, this dwelling has a later Greek Revival style six-panel center door southern entrance with transom and sidelights, entablature and pilasters. Four first-floor, and five second-floor, windows have lintels. The original center door entrance, and pediment, had been on the eastern facade. The eastern windows are 12- over-12 sash. Originally an ell connected front with rear. The Cherryfield post office may have been on the west wing at one time. The hip roof is punctuated by two massive chimneys. The original kitchen was on the northeast of the first story, with beehive oven and open hearth. One of the second-story rooms is decorated in Greek Revival style. After four generations, this house is no longer in the Adams family. KFM, JCB
