MILBRIDGE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH (formerly Union Church)
The Union Church on Bridge Street was organized in 1853; a building built in 1854 by J.T. Wallace, master builder. It had Grecian Doric columns and a spire 106 feet tall. The doorway and rectangular windows are capped with pedimented lintels. This clapboard structure has a bracketed cornice, square steeple base, and a pedimented gable above each clock face. It was financed by the selling of 60 shares of $50 each to members. A vestry was built behind it in 1893 so the ladies would have a place to meet and sew. The church's earliest tradition was that it served all denominations, but in 1907 it became affiliated with the Congregational Conference. The small group struggled along until 1928 when it was federated with the Milbridge Methodist Church, with services alternating back and forth between the two buildings. This federation was not dissolved until 1973 when the church became affiliated with the Congregational Conference. TH
