Description

This one and a half Cape Code style house likely dates to about 1800. It has a center chimney. It was first owned by Solomon Rice who was a noted local businessman and smuggler and who played a prominent role in town affairs when the British occupied Eastport from 1814-1818. During the mid-19th century, the house was owned by George I.G. Rice who was a prominent industrial merchant. Recent real estate listing (https://www.dueeast.com/listing/1586654/3-green-street-eastport-me-04631/) notes house as being built in 1805. From Eastport Walking Tour Brochure, 2010: 51) The Rice Cape 3 Green Street, Colonial center chimney cape. During the mid-1800s this cape was the residence of George I.G. Rice, who was a prominent industrial merchant. • From Eastport Sentinel, October 26, 1881, p.3,c.1: “The store and lot on Water street lately occupied by Geo. I.G. Rice, and one unlivided sixth part of the Samuel Rice estate house and lot, corner of Dana and Green streets, will be sold at public auction at the Post Office, Thursday, Oct. 27th at 10 A.M.”
