Samuel Longfellow Wadsworth was born in Eastport. His father S.B. Wadsworth had built up a strong mercantile business, but Samuel wanted to go to sea. In his early years he sailed on the Baltimore Clipper John Quincy Adams to China. He later returned to take up his father\'s business. Although his business was that of a ship chandlery, he was involved in everything from lumber and a brickyard to raising oranges in Florida.
