Description

This two and a half story Italianate style house was built in 1889 following the Great Fire of October 14 1886 that destroyed an earlier building on the same site. The building’s date of construction is on the fireplace in the building. The new house was built for J.D. Young who was the owner of a major sardine factory in Eastport at this time. Young was active in the early beginnings of the sardine industry at Eastport during the late nineteenth century. The interior of the house has recently been greatly modified into an open floor plan, but the exterior of the house remains largely unchanged. The house features a two story bay window on its east side, a clipped gable roof on the north and south ends and a traditional gable roof on east and west ends. ( ) From Eastport Sentinel, November 20, 1889, p.2,c.5: “Mr. J.D. Young moved last week into the fine new house he has had built this summer upon the lot formerly occupied by the old Whelpley house, on the west side of Water St., betweef Key and Shackford Sts.” August 10, 2012: Building owner, Paul Bush, commented that "1889" (the year the building was built) is on the fireplace in the building.
