Description

This house started as a carriage shop that likely dates to the mid-19th century. In 1885, Charles Martin had a new two and a half story house built in front the carriage shop which became a rear ell to the house. The house has a clipped gable roof running east to west. Ion the south side, the house has a distinctive two story tower with an unusual roof cap. An enclosed porch on the east side of the house serves as the main entrance, It has brick foundation. S.B. Martin did the joiner work and J.N. Coffin did the masonry work. From Eastport Sentinel, September 23, 1885: “Mr. Charles E. Martin has bought the property lately occupied by David Peters as a carriage shop, and will build a dwelling house, using the present building as an L” From Eastport Sentinel, October 14, 1885: “The frame of Mr. Chas. Martin’s new house on Dana Street is up and boarded in. It is two story with a French roof, and when finished, will add one more attractive residence to that street. S.B. Martin is doing the joiner work and J.N. Coffin the mason work.” Eastport City Directory, 1901-02: Lists Charles Martin as residing at 15 Dana Street.
