Description

This one and a half story wood frame Greek Revival style house was likely built about 1840. It does not appear on the 1835 Map of Eastport, but does appear on the 1855 Map of Eastport. It has a pediment roof with chimneys at either end. Pilasters frame each corner of the house. The house has a four bay front facing Key Street and a side entrance with a likely later added side porch. It is similar in style to the house next door to it located at 24 Key Street. Around 1869 the house was bought by Henry Howard Wadsworth soon after his return from participating in the Civil War. The house remained in the Wadsworth family until Henry’s unmarried daughter, Mary Howard Wadsworth who grew up and lived in the house all of her life, died in 1970. This Wadsworth house, along with another Wadsworth house located at 62 High Street, was often painted yellow. Email from John Raye, April 9, 2024: 22 Key Street was bought by Henry Howard Wadsworth around 1869 I believe and kept until his unmarried daughter Mary Howard Wadsworth died in 1970. Wadsworth houses were often yellow as was 22 Key St.
